Locations
My studio is located in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn off of the 2, 3 trains at Grand Army Plaza, the B, Q trains at 7th Avenue, close to Park Slope, and only twenty minutes by subway from Manhattan. By car, I am just off of Eastern Parkway at Grand Army Plaza.
Over the years I have taught at several locations including student’s homes, schools, music stores, and my own home. While the idea of having a teacher come to one’s home may seem like the perfect situation for busy New Yorkers, experience has taught me that my teaching is more succesful in my studio for several reasons:
I have access to a full range of equipment (mouthpieces, trumpets, oils, swabs, etc) and can often take care of very minor repairs that might otherwise inhibit the lesson. In my studio we have access to some of the latest innovations in music education including SmartMusic, play-a-longs, recording devices (it’s like looking in the mirror!), and a huge database of CD recordings (listening is key!). In addition, I have a piano, which is useful for demonstration and accompaniment, as well as an extensive library of sheet music (duet books, classical solos, fake books, etude books, etc). When a student is in their own home (youth and adults alike), the distractions can often be overwhelming whether from pets, other family members, phone calls, TV, computer, or simply the dinner hour. There is a respect and commitment that comes with schlepping to someone’s studio on a weekly basis. I’ve realized that students almost ALWAYS treat the instructor more positively and practice more often when they have the responsibility of going somewhere instead of staying at home. There are several in-home private lesson companies in New York (note: I do occasionally arrange to teach in a student’s home), but I strongly encourage students and parents wanting to get the most out of private lessons to truly consider the commitment they are making.
